Life and Times of an IDIOT

A few days back ,while returning back home from office in a 2 hour bus journey , a candid conversation with my friends got diverted to an issue."I am not leading the life that I would have liked to" , I said .Much to the astonishment of my friends who started condemning me for being an Idiot who just did not know what to do with his life and just wanted to pass vague remarks about life only for the sake of doing so. I tried hard to explain what I actually was trying to convey but felt that I couldn't drive home the point.I felt like someone who knew that he had a very valid point but could not provide enough or should i say the right arguments to prove his point.

I decided to give up on that topic that day just to be reminded about it once again after watching 3 idiots .If you are stil reading this article for a review then please quit as I am not the right person to do so coz I have been totally floored by this movie.3 Idiots once again raises the question on India's education system which has been so overtaken by the Grading system, competion and race to get to the top that it has left invention, creation, logic, genius all behind.Todays toppers who are celebrated and looked up to(by parents, teachers, others...) are no one but people who spend the better part of their lives memorising text books, reference books etc. written by well know, little known and even unknown authors .The only objective being to score as much marks that they leave behind everyone else and be sucessful in life.

Enter Rancho(Aamir) who believes in learning for the sake of implementing, who believes in challenging the rules of science and ,written by scholars and to validate age old concepts and theories by practically verifying them.Rancho takes a swipe at the teaching methodology used in our universities and the marking system which creates a divide among the student community affecting their morale and self confidence. Also Rancho throws light on the fact that one's financial condition and family pressures determines the amount of risk a person can take in his life.Raju(Sharman) has to do engineering only because he was good at studies in school and worldly wisdom tells that only engineering can help you earn big money in this world(i.e if you cant afford a M.B.B.S degree).Rancho also takes a swipe at this materialistic world where a student does his engineering then does his MBA to end up as a financial consultant in a banking firm in the US.For heavens sake people who take this path have surely not realised their life's motto or may be it was a planned by thier well educated parents who might have devised it as a sure shot recipe of success.May GOD bless all you great peopple.

I was not born to well educated parents who had an MBA or B.Tech degree so engineering was never forced upon me.My father wanted me to do a B.Com degree and get a good job in a banking firm ,something which was considered to be safe during their times. But I was fascinated by science, machines ,physics and other stuff.Like Rancho in the movie I used to engineer and reengineer alarm clocks, old Radios and other electronic equipments that fascinated me.When I first got exposed to computers i was totally amazed by their power and from there was born the passion of becoming a computer engineer.

"What would you want to become in life ?"my secondary school teacher would ask. Some would say Pilot, some would say Doctor,Cricketer, etc. But I would reply with a software engineer not knowing exactly what work it actually involved. But after my H Sc exams I was exposed to the cruel world of competition where your scores and your family's bank balance would decide what future education you would persue.I was lucky as I had my family's financial backing whereas some of my friends had to drop the idea of getting into engineering thanks to low scores and not having the ability to pay huge donations to the greedy Engineering institutes in Mumbai.

When i finally secured my admission in Mumbai University as Computer Engineer I was very excited about the fact that finally I would leave the rat race and start learning concepts rather than mugging text books. The Subjects were fascinating to start with in the first year itself .Mechanics,B.E.E,Engineering Drawing etc. but soon I realised that no matter how much you enjoyed the subjects the final objective was to score good marks and to maintain an overall engineering average of above (60 %) to be eligible for placements with no more than two K.Ts (failures) .It would all still could have made sense if the question papers year after year did not have the same theory questions and even similar problems with certain numbers changed here and there. In order to pass and also to score well all that we needed to do was to go back n get solutions to papers of the last five years and that would more or less make it.After my first year I revisited my strategy towards exams by trying to enjoy myself by learning new concepts just to gain knowedge in the first few months of thesemester and devote the last few weeks when exams came nearby to study only to score marks.I could not afford to score less or fail exams and miss out on a chance of getting a good placement(The final objective at that tym).

Second year passed by nicely with this strategy.By this time I had realised that I was here only to get a degree and was adding little to my technical knowedge. This got more pathetic and appalling in the third year when even practicals were neglected as just 'Time Pass hours'.We (The Bhurjee Club..our enngineering gang of friends)would sit down in lectures with an R.S Agarwal, and a Shakuntala Devi and solve their problems as the wordly wise told us that this was a sure shot way to get to Infosys the haven of IT industry.

In the third year I was kept down and away from college for a month thanks to a bout of Jaundice which meant that I missed my lectures .I felt that I could easily make up by studying in the last month and going through the last few years papers.I failed that year and thats when I reaised that it wasnt last minute studying that helped me pass but the efforts I took in understanding concepts throughout the semester that helped me pass with flying colours.

A Live KT meant that I couldnt appear for placement interviews with TCS ,a heartbreak moment , but till that time I had learnt the funda for surviving Engineering taught by my gang of frinends. We used to fool our hearts ,tell it that ALL IZZ WELL and it worked.I eventually got into LNT Infotech.Got a good pay package(joking ;-p) and enjoyed the remaining months of my engineering.I got my degree but apart from a moment of pride, that degree doesnt make me proud all the tym coz I know that it was not hard earned. Its a degree for our family and relatives but only we know how much that means in the real world, in the IT industry.

Daily I come across many of my colleagues mostly engineers all frustrated ,planning to either switch jobs or go for higher studies. They blame the renumeration for their frustration but the fact is that each one of them is frustrated with life. They are frustrated coz the life they had dreamt about living after getting an engineering degree is not there .It does not exist.Neither the respect for being an engineer nor the excitement of engineering innovation, excellence. Its all missing. We are being treated as slaves.Resources they call us .Some of the best brains of the nation, we are supposed to be but we are treated on par with computers and stationery in the office.

What is the final objective of slogging in the IT industry? Well for most of them its a trip to a foreign country probably the U.S or the U.K .Earn big money in small time and enjoy a cozy life.Well apart from that you also get to go to exotic foreign locations and party out there.Thats it .End of story. If someone had warned me before hand that this is all that you can get from an engineer's degree I would have probably backed out, trodded on a different path, chosen a different destiny for myself.

Few think about fulfilling their dreams and desires .For most making money is the ONLY desire. When I look back at all my friends who had a passion for engineering and couldnt make it there ,I feel bad bcoz everyday I see so many around me who do not deserve to be engineers.Who fear almost everyone n everything and never make use of the knowledge(however little) they gained during a prestigious 4 year course. For whom being in the managers good book is the only goal, even if it means agreeing to vague illogical incorrrect suggestions given by their superiors.Everyone has learnt to keep quiet to compromise to adjust. But I am afraid if that was the objective of educating so many youngsters ,empowering them to question old beliefs and to establish new ideas .

In the final placement scene of 3 idiots the HR guy tells Raju that your frank attitude may not go down well with our clients and you may need to get a bit more diplomatic.Raju shoots back saying that has gone through a lot to get this frank attitude and would rather lose the job than lose the attitude. Its this attitude that needs to be cultivated by every engineer. We need to realize the great power that has come with knowledge and just because your colleague is wiling to folow the traditional path doesnt mean that you follow suit. You have earned a prestigious degree atleast do not belittle that degree by giving to the whims of a senior MBA degree holder.Tell them that you are right with what you say and that you deserve better and if they do not agree be ready to shove it in their face and quit.

Finally if you feel that there is something else to be achieved ,if you feel that this IT industry is not where you belong ,if you think that you have much more to give back to this world ,then dont hesitate to take a step forward,JAAO JEE LO APNI ZINDAGi and if somewhere you feel scared or bobbed down by your family commitments or just by the society, just calm your heart and tell it that BHAIYYA ALL IZZ WELL.

Champions Trophy --2009

Dt:30 September 2009

IT is an important day in the Champions trophy which will decide two semi finalist spots from Group A .Earlier Engalnd and Newzealand have already qualified for this editions semi finals.

Today is an intersting day with India,Australia fighting for the second semi final spot from group A.Pakistan with two wins has already qualified for the semifinals.India lost to Pakistan ,while Australia beat WI in their previous encounter. Ind-Aus game was washed out.

Its a must win game for India but winning alone is not enough.India has to beat Wi by a big margin and hope that Pakistan beats Australia by a bigger margin.Looks a bit complicated but since the PAK-AUS game will end earlier we will have a clear picture of India's chances by later this evening.

Traditionally Pakistani teams are known to go to any extent to avoid Indian teams progressing to the next stage. If this were a Pakistani side say of the 80s and even 90s then India would have given up hope by now.But nowadays Pakistani mindsets are different atleast as far as cricket is concerned and one can only hope they allow Indian fans a reason to smile and to praise them today.
But finally all depends on India that if they get a chance how well can they manage to reach the semifinals.Just for the sake of the game I hope that Aussies are beaten today and the IND-WI game is well set up.

Cheers.

ICC World T20 Final

Dt:21 june 2009

Its been two years since India won the inaugural T20 world cup.Today we will be witnessing the finals of the second ICC T2o cricket World Cup.Two years back a promising Pakistani side lead by a promising star(Misbah ul Haq) almost beat a young Indian side .But riding on the success of their vibrant/lucky captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni(Mahi) India won that match and brought a World Cup back to a cricket crazy nation.

But amongst all that excitement one could do nothing but feel sorry for the Pakistani team who had that final in their pockets somewhere in the middle of the last over.Today that Pakistani team has reached the finals of the 2nd T20 WC as well. And DESPITE all that has happened in India in the last few months thanks to the insurgents from across the border ,I for one want to see this Pakistani team win this final. I want them to win it for the people of that nation which has been plagued by national & international politics. I want them to win it for all those people in Pakistan who have been affected by the Taliban captivation and the National Army's bid to push them out of their country. I want them to win for all those Pakistani cricket fans who have been deprived of cricket (the national team didnt play much cricket last yr )thanks to the security condition in their nation. For all these reasons they deserve to win it this season.
GO Pakistan GO !!!

NOTE:Even as I am writing this Blog. Match Status is as follows.
SriLanka won the toss And Elected to bat first.
SL-30/3 after 5 overs . Tilekeratne Dilshan 0(5) -out.
(Dilshan was the leading run scorer of the tournament till the start of this game).

NEW INDIAN ADVERTISEMENTS 2009

With the IPL Season2 in full flow, its once again a time for brands to get noticed via new advertisement strategies which captivate the minds of viewers. Being an ardent cricket fan myself and with the strategic break introduced mid innings I have inadvertently ended up noticing quite a few new ad campaigns this season.

The Indian ad agencies have come up a long way in the past few years and amaze us with the various concepts that they use . Lets have a look at a few that have become extremely popular this year.
  • Election ads
With the election season in full flow the most prominent ad on TV is of the two major parties in India .While NDA's 'India Shining' campaign backfired on them in the last assembly elections, Congress's Aam Aadmi campaign did the trick for them. But this year they have come back with two new tag lines targeting the Indian voters.
Congress-with 'Aam Aadmi ke badte kadam har kadam pe Bharath buland' has once again gone with the aam aadmi .
BJP - with 'Nidar neta Chunenge hum Faislo me ho jiske dum' has taken a dig once again at Congress' weak leadership issue ,this season.

  • VODAFONE robots (Apparently they are called ZooZoos)
When Vodafone took over Hutch's stake in the mobile service provider company it had a lot to prove. Today Vodafone has managed to have its own identity in India thanks to its strong brand canvassing and great network and good offers for both prepaid and postpaid customer base. But as far as ad campaigns were concerned Vodafone had a tough choice to make , to either continue with Hutch's famous Dog or to create its own new brand ambassador. The company decided to continue with the Pup(Pug) for its Vodafone help campaign which became very popular.
But nowadays the company has hit a new ad campaign featuring small bot like creatures canvassing various services provided by the company.Seems like finally Vodafone has got a new brand ambassador. There is this one ad canvassing the phone contact backup service ....u just have to look at each of the bots (zoozoos) playing around when in the queue ,each having a unique way of approaching the xerox machine when its turn comes.Looks like a simple ad at the onset, but a lot of thought and research has gone into it.Similarly there are many more. But will they do away with the pup,....is what remains to be seen.

  • Mango Frooti
While Frooti has seen one of the most successful ad campaigns in INDIA with the 'Mango Fruity Fresh n juicy' campaign. They never seemed to get a new tag line for their brand. This season they have come up with a very unique concept wherein we see grown up people just sipping into the Frooti tetra pack till they can suck out the last drop of the drink, making a very irritable sound. We all must have done this at some stage of our life and sometimes do it unknowingly even now. Capturing that into an add with a tagline saying 'Why Grow up?' ....I think was just amazing.

  • Airtel
Airtel have in the past hired many bigwigs for their ad campaigns but the sparkling chemistry between their new brand anbassadors Vidya Balan and R Madhavan is unmatched for .Madhavan might not have got his film career going in Bollywood but there is no doubting his acting prowess. He must have convinced millions of couples in India to carry on their Phone spendings even during recession with the 'Pyar me no cutbacks' tagline. Too Good this one....
The Madhavan - Vidya Balan jodi shall be coming back together with Raj Kaushal (Anthony Kaun Hai) directed romantic comedy. Kaushal who has earlier also made films like Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and Shaadi Ka Ladoo admits that he was inspired by the Airtel commercials featuring Madhavan and Vidya which made him cast the two together.

Well that's it for now.....I will be adding a few more to this list when i get some time off ..till then cheers !!!

Mumbai terror attacks—An unbiased dissection

Dt:27,December 2008

It’s been exactly a month since the biggest terrorist attack on India. Eight terrorists holding the city of Mumbai captive for over 36 hours ,a fact which seems highly impractical on the face of it. Now exactly after a month of the incident, which was followed by arrests, speculation, constant international intervention and accusations , what is the situation on ground today .What is it that we have learnt from this tragic incident? How have we changed ourselves in the past month, or have we? Well the questions are endless and the answers seem to be minimal.

Well I have been prodding over this issue for the past few days and decided that I may as well share my views with you. With all the media intervention and political commentary on the incident it is highly possible that we the general public may as well be kept away from the truth. The TRUTH, which may be contrastingly different from what we have been fed by our daily news channels, which I am not sure always have the right news with them as well. Having said that, what are the tools that we have at our disposal for analyzing the attack, nothing but common sense and our knowledge of the world which may or may not be complete? The effort is to try and come up with an opinion that is not influenced by the media inputs and at the same time come up with a solution for the same.

ATTACK POSTMORTEM

What we know
  • Two men started firing randomly at CST .There was an air of casual confidence in the way they moved around killing people.
  • We have on record these two terrorists moving around hijacking peoples cars.
  • It is alleged that these two guys were responsible for killing 3 of the best Policemen by shockingly appearing in front of them when they least expected them.(Already a lot of controversy has been created by one of our MPs regarding this theory ..but this is one of the things that only eye witnesses can confirm. and we surprisingly don’t have any of our news channels having an inside story about this incident. Strange!!) .
  • Also we know that terrorists entered Trident , Taj and Nariman house and held people captive, especially foreign nationals.

What we don’t know
  • Exactly how many terrorists were involved in all in this entire episode.
  • How many had landed in Mumbai on that fateful day and have gone undercover.
  • What is the sort of local support that these guys had since it would have been highly impossible for them to carry out this large scale mission just by watching a few maps on Google Earth.

Well I could have continued adding to this list for another hour but we may as well read our newspapers for that. Continuing the discussion forward let us have a look at the accusations mad in the International community.

INTERNAL JOB --CONSPIRACY Theory (Pak’s Accusation)

Long after the 9/11 attacks in the US, I was shocked to see a documentary doing the rounds in internet. A documentary claiming the existence of a secret community which controls the US banking system, the Federal Reserve as well as many banking organizations across the world. A community which consists of the worlds richest people (Rockfellar,Bush family etc.) who are planning to take over the world by uniting the entire world under a single government and a single banking system. I shall elaborate about this conspiracy theory in one of the other articles.
But it is speculated that these guys are carrying out terror attacks with internal help so that people surrender to fear and accept some of the strict laws (POTA,TADA etc.) which will strictly deter the privacy of an individual in a free democratic rule and also allow him to be arrested and his house to be searched without proof or Search Warrant. Whilst these may as well be what they are that is Conspiracies—we must keep a strict watch and knowledge about what is going around us.
Now a few people in Pakistan have alleged that the 26/11 attacks were a part of an internal Indian job. As far as India is concerned, we were going through recession and a severe inflation problem when the attacks happened. So the government was in knee deep problem itself and would not have been stupid enough to create trouble for themselves. Elections were nearing and the opposition also had enough points on which it could have brought this government down. Hence influencing polls might not be a reason if it indeed were an internal job. The only other reason which explains the internal job theory would be enforcing of strict Anti –terror, anti human laws(whilst you and I are happy that the government has implemented stricter laws ,we have been kept in the dark as to what provisions are there in these laws). Also it might be worth noticing that in India there is only one political party which is highly pro-antiterrorism laws. and it may highly be possible that they may be a part of the secret ‘World Acquisition community’.

SHIFTING ATTENTION/FORCE FROM AFGHAN BORDER (India’s Accusation)

Whilst Pakistan accused India of the internal hand. India accused that Pakistan (ISI/LASHKAR/Army or whoever) conducted the terror attacks in India so that they could instigate India into a war .This would give Pakistan a chance to move troops away from their North western front were they were made to fight their Taliban brothers whom the ISI has been supporting since ages.Whilst Washington had forced Pakistan to act against the Taliban extremists as partners of the war on terror ,Pakistan itself has been reluctant to go hard on these extremists.
The thing that has been supporting this theory is the fact that Pakistan has been moving out all its troops from its north western border to the Indian border ,even though India has clearly stated that war would not be pursued against Pakistan.

OUR CONCLUSIONS.

While assuming that India and Pakistan had never been and in the future will never be good friends. It is assumed that one of them has played mischief. Whilst it is quite evident sitting in India that it is Pakistan who is the culprit, I would not be surprised if the average common man in Pakistan has started believing that India has done this shameful act to get the better of Pakistan. The sad part of the story being that You and I will never come to know what the truth is .Even as we watch our media revealing new facts daily and getting swayed away by them, we must pause for a while and think on our own. Is this the truth? Am I being exposed to reality? Or am I making a fool out of myself by reacting to something which was just designed to get a reaction out of me.

PUBLIC REACTION

I have long been hearing about the never say die spirit of Mumbai, the fact that mumbaikars just rock back out of any situation and carry on with life as usual. While I salute this spirit of Mumbai .In the past few weeks I have started doubting that theory.
Rather than calling this a never say die spirit I would call it the insensitive nature of Mumbai. True that the people here have gone through a lot .True that every Mumbaikar is experienced enough to handle any adverse situation. But the fact remains that we are plain INSENSITIVE.
Common it could have been you or me who would have been the first person to be shot at CST.What would have been your response to the situation then.Well a large number of people attended the peace rally held and many of them were young college going students. But I somewhat was shocked by the indifference shown by the working class.
Just 24 hours into the attack , the terrorists still holding your fellowmen captive and where are you, OHH!! attending office so that you don’t lose a days salary.BIZZARE!!.While I had intended to keep this article precise ,I just cant help add a couple of dialogues that people I know came up with during this tragic Incident.

One of my friend’s boss :Why do you need an off day.the firing is not happening at your house.

One of my friend : Tu kyu tension leta hain ? jo bhi Taj me fase hain who sab bade log hi hain. [Why are you worrying, people who are stuck up in TAJ are financially well to do] …GREAT !!!!

This attitude of our working class, of essentially people who are knowledgeable shocks me to a great extent. Why cant we as a nation demand a few things from our government. Why do we turn a blind eye to all the danger that’s surrounding us.Tragedies have come and hit us all the time, be it earthquakes ,riots ,floods ,or terror attacks,or for that matter even reservations .But after an initial hoopla the public just tends to forget about it.We are so insecure about getting into politics, but even by staying out of the system we can bring about change. We can force the government to think about it.But are we as people of a democratic country doing it enough. Are we not letting our own nation down by taking all that is thrown at us lying down.

Common guys we pay our taxes to the government so that we get our rights and security has to be the biggest thing that an Individual can demand of a democratic government. I shall not go on lecturing about how we can change because then the obvious question that is backfired to you is that “What have you done to change the scenario?” Nothing. I am as much guilty of inaction as all of us are. And that my dear friends is the only thing that has provoked me into writing this article.

WHAT CAN WE DO

Well the answer again is simple but the implementation is not. There are enough people in India who are learned enough to understand and run the politics of this nation. You cannot bring about major changes by staying out of the system. Despite being just another movie, RDB has shown that what would happen if you try to change the system from outside. You would inadvertently fail. You have to be a part of the system and when you decide to be a part of it ,you should be a strong part of it so that your voice is heard.

I may come across as a movie buff but one of the movies that I strictly recommend for all those who have a vision to change the nation is Yuva. The movie describes that how in the current scenario a student movement can remove the rot in our existing system.Imagine the number of students studying in colleges across the nation. If we manage to draw even half of that population into a nationalized student movement and make them identify and create competition for the current tainted candidates standing in our elections, we can change. A few days back I read about a gentleman forming a Peoples party (I don’t remember its name).I would suggest that we should try to get a many young people into this movement. A revolution is all we need and unlike Bhagat Singh and Chandreshekar, we are not fighting a foreign rule but our own people.

Believe me ,if we have the will then we can go a long way in achieving it.You don’t need to give up your career plans as we will have new students rolling out every year. But the idea is to instill the feeling of rebellion in the student community.I would have appreciated if Raghu could have given some gyaan to our college dudes ,who would prefer watching MTV roadies than watch national news.I recollect one of the contestants saying and I quote “Newspaper padhkar main kya karu” and that too with an air of arrogance. There is lot of zeal and enthusiasm in our youth the only thing is that it is not directed properly.

Our resolve

Should be to come up with a national movement by getting together the entire literate working class of the nation on one platform.
Build a propaganda to tackle terrorism not by making vague remarks but by forming a national group which would simultaneously contest elections and question the establishment, if not replace the existing government .

If a few of us come together and have a peace rally it is not gonna have any change in the tactics of the government. We need a resolve to make this bigger, let our voice be heard and for that we need firm determination and belief in our ability.I don’t know if you guys have it in you to make this happen but I am sure I DO.
